At the core of PowerShaper, the energy storage solution from Pixii, is the Pixiibox. An advanced bi-directional power conversion unit. Bi-directionality means that the energy flow can go both ways, from grid to the battery and back to the grid, through the same power electronics. This makes the power electronics, compact, reliable and cost effective.
The PixiiBox is modular and many units can be connected in parallel. The desired capacity can be reached by adding the required number of modules to a cabinet. If more power or energy storage is required, several cabinets can be installed. This makes it possible to scale the system to the power and energy required for a given application.
Our modular approach allows our solutions to be finely tuned to customer needs, while lowering barriers to implementation. To make the most of this potential, we work closely with each customer to understand their requirements and opportunities.
The brain and communication center in the PowerShaper is a gateway communicating with all elements within the system as well as the outside world for system monitoring and advanced control, enabling both local flexibility as well as the opportunity for coordinated and flexible fleet management.
In order to manage the overall increase in electricity consumption, distribution companies are looking at ways to push consumers to even out their loads over the day. One mechanism frequently used is “Demand charges”. This is typically a monthly charge which is based on the average maximum load averaged over a short time window (15-30 minutes). This can have a significant impact on the electricity bill. Energy storage behind the meter is a good way to avoid it.
In markets where the kWh cost is changing during the day, for the same reason, The energy storage system can be used in the same way. Batteries are charged when the electricity price is low and electricity is provided from the system when the electricity price is high.
Often, facilities with solar panels on their outer walls or rooftops will have times of the day when the solar generation is higher than their own consumption. This energy will typically be sent back to the grid at a very low price or without any compensation at all.
Combining solar generation with energy storage, excess solar energy can be stored for later use and thus maximizing the return on investment in the solar plant as well as the energy storage.
The various advantages mentioned above will typically prove that an energy storage system from Pixii is a sound investment. The different parameters vary from market to market, but with a product lifetime beyond 10 years, it will pay off.
