Stadtwerke Hünfeld wanted to future-proof its energy business as the gas market continues to decline. The goal: build a scalable battery storage system to support energy trading, stabilize the grid, and open up new revenue streams – all while giving back to the local community.
As traditional energy sources become less viable, Stadtwerke Hünfeld made a strategic decision to strengthen its position in the energy market. The local utility needed a massive battery storage system to support grid stability in the area, contributing to a more resilient energy system while participating in energy markets and use the generated income to help fund public services in Hünfeld, including local transport and social initiatives.
Stadtwerke Hünfeld deployed 12 Pixii PowerBase XL units, connected to three 2.5 MVA mid-voltage transformers. The system is used for energy trading and delivers key grid services such as frequency containment (FCR) and frequency restoration (aFRR). It also supports the local grid operator by compensating for reactive power.
“As a small Stadtwerke, we are proud to have delivered such a large and complex project without support from an EPC-something that’s not common in our sector. Thanks to the strong cooperation with Pixii, we now have a reliable and flexible battery system up and running. It’s already contributing to the grid and positioning us well for future revenue opportunities.”
Manuel Gollbach, CEO, Stadtwerke Hünfeld
• A modular and flexible solution to provide grid services such as FCR and aFRR
• Enables energy trading and multiple revenue streams
• Scalable setup with strong grid connection
Konja Wick, Sales Director Europe, Pixii
“The project in Hünfeld has been Pixii’s largest to date and, at the time of installation, the biggest battery storage system in the state of Hesse by MWh. It proves the strength of our technology and motivates us to build even bigger systems.”
The battery system supports grid stability and helps reduce exposure to fluctuating energy prices, an increasingly important factor as more renewable energy enters the mix. Operated via an external EMS, the system is designed for virtual expansion, giving Stadtwerke Hünfeld the flexibility to connect additional systems in the future and scale both capacity and power.
Beyond the technical benefits, the project generates new income that is reinvested directly into the community. This includes funding for public transportation, local initiatives, essential services-and even the operation of two public swimming pools, one indoor and one outdoor. By strengthening both the grid and local services, the system brings clear value to Hünfeld’s residents.
