As Slovakia strides towards modernizing its energy infrastructure, Greenbat and Pixii have joined forces to pioneer the first battery storage system certified for primary frequency regulation (FCR) in the V4 countries. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources in Slovakia.
Slovakia’s journey towards a sustainable energy future has faced considerable challenges. The country’s grid infrastructure, while updated over the years, still struggles to accommodate the dynamic demands of modern electricity consumption, particularly with the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources. These outdated systems are ill-equipped to handle the high peak consumption and load imbalances that are now commonplace.
Additionally, the regulatory framework in Slovakia lacked established pathways for the pre-certification and certification of battery storage systems, creating a formidable barrier to innovation.
To tackle these challenges, Greenbat and Pixii initiated a project, facilitated by MTS spol. s r.o., Pixii’s exclusive representatives for Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Hungary, to install and certify a battery energy storage system (BESS) for primary frequency regulation. Working closely with Right Power a.s., who ensured connection to the local distribution network and co-owns part of the battery systems, the project was executed in three phases:
Phase 1: Installation of 25 Pixii PowerShaper cabinets, providing a total output of 1,250 kW and a capacity of 1,200 kWh. This initial phase was crucial for trading purposes and laid the groundwork for subsequent expansions.
Phase 2: Expansion with an additional 26 cabinets, each with a 50 kW output and 50 kWh capacity, adding up to 1,300 kW and 1,300 kWh respectively.
Phase 3: Further enhancement with 47 more cabinets, bringing the total output to 2,600 kW and the capacity to 2,600 kWh.
The entire system is managed through advanced software by Ipesoft, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
“The innovative battery storage charges when the system frequency is high and supplies energy to the grid when the frequency is low, helping customers address current energy challenges.”
Marián Smik, Management Executive, Greenbat
The implementation of Pixii’s PowerShaper technology has revolutionized Greenbat’s ability to provide ancillary services. The system’s rapid response time, capable of adjusting power within three seconds, is ideally suited for primary frequency regulation, helping to stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable electricity supply. This quick reaction capability is particularly beneficial for handling the fluctuations inherent in renewable energy sources, making the grid more resilient to outages and voltage variations.
The decentralized nature of the solution enhances the stability and robustness of the battery storage system. By distributing the energy storage across multiple units, the system can better withstand individual unit failures and maintain overall performance. This modular approach also simplifies maintenance and allows for flexible scaling to meet increasing demand.
Another significant advantage is the system’s ability to predict and respond to market conditions in real-time. This predictive capability, supported by Ipesoft’s advanced software, enables Greenbat to optimize energy trading strategies, maximizing both economic and operational efficiency.
“This collaboration with Greenbat demonstrates the transformative potential of our PowerShaper technology, offering rapid response and robust performance to stabilize the grid and integrate renewable energy seamlessly.”
Morten Schøyen, Chief Product Officer, Pixii
Since its inception, the Greenbat and Pixii collaboration has exceeded expectations, providing 4 MW of FCR with an installed capacity of 5.15 MW. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Slovakia’s energy landscape, positioning Greenbat as a leader in innovative energy solutions within the region.
Greenbat plans to expand this pioneering technology across other regions, further solidifying its role in advancing Slovakia’s energy transition and setting new standards for renewable energy integration and grid stability.
