In the quaint town of Revetal, Norway; Meny, one of the country’s leading grocery store chains, is pioneering a sustainable future with its ambitious goal to cut its climate impact by 50% by 2030. This initiative encompasses both direct emissions, like those from transportation, and indirect emissions from energy consumption. A key step in this journey was the installation of a 300 kWp solar PV system on the roof of their Revetal store, propelling Meny towards its sustainability targets.
Meny’s commitment to quality and sustainability is reflected in its proactive approach to managing the energy produced by its new solar installation. While solar power marks a significant step towards sustainability, it poses unique challenges due to its unpredictable nature and the potential to produce more energy than the store can consume at peak times. This excess production could stress the local grid or go to waste without a proper management strategy.
Recognizing these challenges, Meny sought a solution that not only managed the surplus energy efficiently but also aligned with its financial and environmental goals.
In response, TGN Energy and Pixii introduced a state-of-the-art solution: the Pixii PowerShaper Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), integrated with TGN Grid.
This advanced system serves as the brain of the energy operation, employing intelligent algorithms to decide whether to store or utilize the energy based on predefined targets. These targets can be adjusted to focus on energy consumption, financial outcomes, or environmental impacts, providing Meny with the flexibility to adapt to changing needs and market conditions.
“The flexibility contribution from Statnett will likely be around 600,000 to 700,000 NOK per year per installed MW, which gives a payback period of about ten years now.”
Mattias Schill, Head of Energy & Sustainability Services, Å Entelios
The Pixii PowerShaper BESS and TGN Grid have transformed Meny’s approach to energy management. With peak shaving capabilities, the system efficiently manages energy consumption during high-demand periods, thus reducing costs and alleviating pressure on the local grid. The system’s automated and AI-driven functionalities ensure optimal use of energy, enhancing cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability.
“To address rising energy costs, we have installed solar PV panels on the shopping mall’s rooftop and integrated Pixii energy storage to capture the generated energy. This allows us to not only use stored solar power when needed but also participate in wholesale electricity trading, generating additional income”
Martin Gran, Manager for RE Shopping Mall and Meny Grocery store
By working with Å Entelios, a specialist in electricity trading, Meny has tapped into the ancillary services market, particularly Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR), to further stabilize the power grid. By maintaining a frequency of 50Hz, crucial for the operational integrity of the Nordic power grid, Meny not only contributes to grid stability but also generates significant revenue.
This engagement in the ancillary market not only provides a financial return but also positions Meny as a key player in the transition to a more electrified society. The use of Pixii’s BESS to store excess energy and sell it when prices are high or use it when prices are low aligns with Meny’s sustainability goals while optimizing financial benefits.
“The integration of our PowerShaper system at Meny Revetal demonstrates the potential for retail locations to become energy autonomous, significantly reducing their carbon footprint while contributing to a more stable grid.”
Morten Schøyen, CPO, Pixii AS
Today, Meny Revetal not only meets its daily energy requirements efficiently but also contributes to grid stability and environmental sustainability. The system’s flexibility in prioritizing between consumption, cost, and carbon footprint makes it a pioneering model for other businesses aiming to enhance their energy management practices.
This collaboration between TGN Energy, Pixii and Å Entelios exemplifies how innovative solutions can turn the challenges of renewable energy into sustainable business practices that benefit both the company and the community. Meny Revetal is a shining example of how businesses can drive change towards a greener future.
